Whenever you obtain a new encounter you must switch it out for an egg, no keeping encounters that are not eggs there is no exception (no legend captures, fossils, etc.) Starting off you will have a Tepig named DONOTUSE:), this is the Pokémon you will trade out to obtain your starter.
